The many faces of Aryarine

Aryarine or Alvyera as I called her before changing her name to something more elven sounding. Has undergone a couple of transformations. Her basic facial features have stayed almost the same since the beginning, but trying to go for a more realistic and original Altmer look has made her look drastically different nonetheless.

This was Aryarine at the complete beginning when I first made her. I think this was using Better Females by Bella facial textures, giving her a cartoon-like look. My mod order being a complete mess at the time this might just be SG Female facial textures instead, I can't really remember anymore. (Notice the lack of TES ridges!)

This was the first time I decided to change her look a bit, I completely switched over to SG Female, made her nose a bit thinner and longer and used the brow ridges from Ethereal Elven Overhaul, to make her look a lot more like the original elves and a bit more realistic as well.

Now here we have a drastic change in Aryarine her appearance, due to having to reinstall Skyrim and all of my mods from scratch. SG Female has been replaced with Real Girls and I started using an ENB. Made a lot of minor tweaks to her face as well for more realism.

Still fine tuning her look a little bit, more equally sized lips and a change of hair (using Ponytail Hairstyles for a bit more realism in my opinion. (She looks quite a bit uglier and harsher, and the lighting isn't helping either.) The eye mods I use in case you're wondering are Covereyes and The Eyes of Beauty.

And here we basically have Aryarine as she is now (granted after this image was taken I lowered her mouth a tiny bit and made her nose a bit longer/lower, but she looks mostly the same.) Using the SG Hair Pack, I was able to finally find a hairstyle that looked realistic and didn't make poor Aryarine look like a drag queen. (Oke she still does a little bit, but I ain't complaining.)

So there you have it the many changes I made to my Altmer just to make her look less like a Team Rocket member and more like an actual Thalmor. Thanks to all the mod authors and thanks to Stakado for his ENBs' which are great overall, but especially if you run the game on a toaster like I do.

Scent in the North - Arc 1, Chapter 2

The walk to Solitude was uneventful giving me ample time to admire the city located on a peninsula which in turn was based upon a stone arch reaching out over the wide Kath River. The majority of the city was located on the west shore right next to the mountain ridge I descended from most of it not betraying itself to my view until after I made the complete descend to make an 180 degree turn up the path towards the main city gate, across the river at the very tip of the peninsula the blue palace I had heard much about lay gleaming in the sun, its sapphire roof glistering as if it were to be the crown of the city. Any majesty one would assign to the city though quickly gets diluted by the smell of fish and rotten eggs coming from the harbor district located below the stone arch, a labyrinth of docks, warehouses and taverns, dirty laborers in constant motion between the three.

Local guards at the tall entrance gate were stopping the occasional adventurer or merchant from entering and leaving the city, investigating their knapsacks and asking their basic inquisitive questions. A nasty glance I got by one of them was all the hindrance I had to deal with while passing the stone wall protecting the city.

White brick walled buildings with red bricked rooftops were a far cry from the composition I had gotten used to during my short time in Skyrim, a province which seemed to pride itself in its straw roofs and wooden foundations. To my surprise the situation within Solitude its walls was not too different from that outside, there were quite a few people about seeming to go about their business on this sunny morning, groups standing in chatter, merchants yelling what products they were offering, the town crier equally loud in delivering the latest news, but the general atmosphere appeared a relaxed one, the civil war did not seem to reach this far west.

Elenwen her directions were easy enough to follow, passing the city square which was filled with various stands selling meats, vegetables, spices and linens, Castle Dour was easy enough to spot with its own inner wall which was taller than the one protecting the entire city blocking most of the castle from actual sight, passing a couple of Imperial squads practicing their swordsmanship and archery on the scattered straw practice targets.

Making my way up the stairs carved into the side of the eastern wall located next to the mountain I made my way up towards the tall tower, two Altmer a male and female in moonstone colored elven armor stood in front of the entrance into the tower, their angular faces hard to characterize below their helmets.

“Greetings, do you have any business with the ambassador?” The guard his voice speaking the words clear, but roughly, betraying his education not to be from Alinor itself.

“The emissary has send me to assist Orondil with his local affairs.”

“Ah yes, the messenger who brought news of your arrival just left, you are free to enter.” The female said lowering her shield from her chest.

Once inside I was acknowledged by a wizard sitting in the entrance hall, looking up from a spell tome he was reading. I would have guessed his age to be in the high 200s, his cold stare slightly softening into a look of inquisition before being lowered once again surveying the contents of the tome in his hands.

Walking into the main chamber it was easy to see the resemblance between these Solitude headquarters and the embassy. The almost identical colour stained windows provided most of the illumination in the room, making the white walls dance in shades of green, yellow and red. The room felt a bit cramped with the half dozen of high elves simmering around. Three of them looking like regular Justiciar soldiers in elven armor one of them a female with prominent scarring around her neck, two others dressed in typical Thalmor robes were positioned around the table in the center of the room bend over a map of a domestic area unknown to me, they were flanked by the one Altmer that stood out in the room for he was wearing a bronzed gambeson overcoat not too different from the ones I saw various Nords outside wearing before I entered the headquarters. It was this person I spoke to.

“I was send by the emissary and told to meet with Orondil.”

“Speaking.” The long haired mer said as he looked up from the map. “You must be our beloved new colleague from the south?” His tone friendly and warm, fitting his equally soft dark yellow almost brown eyes.

Unable to suppress my smirk at the mer is friendliness, I answered in equally silky tone. “That would be correct. Lady Elenwen has told me you are in need of assistance?”

Orondil scoffed at the remark. “Hah. You tell them you see an opportunity, and they feel you are incompetent for not seizing the opportunity by yourself. Since when is elven supremacy about physical superiority?” He said while walking up to a bookcase located in the back of the room, pulling out a letter.

“This is a letter I received from Falk Firebeard personal steward of High King Torygg. He has requested help with the situation of illegal black soul gems being exchanged around the local docks. The Imperial legion has tightened patrols and seized a bunch of shipments, but have been unable to locate any distributor or specific clients.”

“And you think this would be an opportunity for us to show some… Thalmor cooperation?” I interrupted him as he handed me the letter.

“Exactly.”

“Where do I begin?”

“Best to speak to the man himself. He works in the blue palace from eight in the morning till eight in the evening, just like the rest of these Nords.”

“I shall pay this Firebeard a visit then.” I said while interchanging the letter in my pocket with the one Elenwen gave me.

“This is from the emissary, as to make my position as new head of affairs in Solitude official. Obviously it will not interfere with your diplomatic duties.”

Orondil sighed. “Gladly. Just make sure to watch yourself, many have come to replace Elenwen after she got promoted and just as many have left.”

“Your advice is appreciated Orondil, may we serve the Dominion in harmony.” I bowed in goodbye to him and the other mer in the room. Thoughts shifting to the blue palace and this certain Firebeard.

A brief update.

So I had to put 'Scent in the North' on a quick hold already, because I succeeded in screwing up my Skyrim while trying out an ENB/SweetFX manager, somehow during the deletion of a previous SweetFX profile something got deleted that made the game only show low resolution textures. A futile driver update later, I decided to bite the bullet and reinstall the game. This all was probably to my own benefit as I probably had way too many graphic mods running for my poor little laptop to handle anyway.

During reinstallation/re-modding I decided to pick 1k instead of 2k textures wherever possible, also made the switch fron the Nexus Mod Manager to Mod Organizer which is something I can recommend to everyone. (Virtual profile you can switch between at a whim? Yes please.) I also decided to follow the S.T.E.P guide together with the general tips on tesgeneral, which ended up giving me a more stable and quicker game which looked just as good as before. I was going to go back to the SweetFX, Realistic Lighting Overhaul and Pure Weather setup I had before, but noticing that the performance impact between those three and one of the more performance friendly ENBs’ was almost the same I’ve decided to switch over to an ENB without lighting and weather altering mods. Hopefully we can now get back to business.

What my Skyrim looked like before.

What it looks like now.
Screenshot was taken with Stakado Cinemascope (Real). Though I've settled on using Stakado his Cinematic ENB.

"Guides" I used during modding.

Scent in the North - Arc 1, Chapter 1

... for further instructions report to First Emissary Elenwen at the Thalmor Embassy located north-west of Solitude capital of Skyrim.

Long live the Aldmeri Dominion.

Carefully I read over the note I had received a few weeks ago, back when I was still serving the Dominion in Valenwood. A note which I had read about a dozen times before and its contents fully known to me, rereading it now was merely a formality as I waited for my reception. Looking up from the letter I once more took in the brightly lit anteroom. The embassy was definitely an improvement over my recent lodgings at various inns across Skyrim, with its high halls, equally high windows and large garden it felt like a miniature castle. I turned back towards the crackling firewood which left a light echo in the quiet hall interrupted only occasionally by quiet footsteps, the warmth of the fire slowly dried my partly braided hair which was still wet with snow from the tempestuous blizzard outside.

“My assistance said that you are the agent they have send from Valenwood?” The words behind me sounded sophisticated, yet carried a certain motherly warmed with them. Turning towards them I was greeted by a female elf a bit shorter than myself, but a lot older, who was draped in smoothly ironed Thalmor robes, the assembly being completed with a standard linen Thalmor cloak resting across her narrow shoulders. The high widows peak due to her dark blonde hair being completely combed backwards made the Altmer face appear even longer than common among the high elves, which in turn made the prominent nose suit the golden visage surprisingly well. Deep set yellow eyes gave the face a certain authoritative sharpness which I hadn’t seen since serving Sanril back in Arenthia. Elenwen fit the description I was given perfectly.

“That is correct emissary. Aryarine of Skywatch at your command.” I responded, slightly bending at the hips in respect.

“It is nice to see that proper etiquette is still being respected down south. I have been spending so much time among these crude Nords I was afraid that the whole thing had died out.”

“It is hard to tell the barbarians and nobles apart at times.”

“Such is the way of men.” She said dryly. “If you will follow me upstairs to my office so that I may explain to you what your presence here is needed for.”

I quietly followed Elenwen as we made our way through the with candles lit dining hall up the stairs into a wide hallway which was only brightened by the light which shone through the many color stained glass windows, the various colors reflecting of the dark stone walls reminded me a bit of the vibrant lustrous walls back in Alinor. A thought reinforced when we entered the emissary her office, the five foot window made the room glow in a combination of yellow, green, red and blue light, various shiny objects like bowls filled with gems and inkwells reflecting the lights into additional rainbows of color.

“Aryarine are you familiar with black soul gems?” Elenwen asked as she sat down in the leather chair behind the large wooden desk.

My brief trance broken I replied. “Yes. It’s the result of soul trapping. Mer and man specifically.”

“Correct and illegal by law.” Elenwen agreed as she opened a letter. “It seems that our colleague Orondil has discovered that these gems are in circulation down at the Solitude docks and is in ‘dire’ need for help as he states in this letter.” She said handing the letter over. “I can only imagine how insignificant the situation actually is, but poor Orondil is a diplomat able to force his will by tongue, not by sword.”
“And you need me to take care of this?” I asked unable to hide the surprise in my voice.

“That would most certainly be appreciated. The actual reason you are here is different, I need someone to take command of our headquarters in Solitude, as you can see Orondil is not exactly a shining example of Altmeri dominance. You came highly praised by my colleagues in Valenwood specifically your former commander Sanril.

The old scoundrel. He made coming to Skyrim sound as a demotion. I thought to myself hiding my excitement as I pocketed the letter. “As you command emissary.”

“Excellent. You may rest in our guest chambers for the night. Take this letter, it will make your new position in Solitude official. Give it to Orondil and he will take care of the rest, he has never been the one to have pride get in the way of things.” Elenwen handed me the second letter as she opened the door.

“Most certainly.” And I left the room with a final bow. My fingertips touching the burned scars on my right cheek as I left the room, a memento which embodied my clearest memory of Sanril.

Lets Play Skyrim (kinda): Scent in the North

Scent in the North Introduction.

So my first attempt at starting a long running series of posts on this blog will be a narrative of my various adventures in Skyrim. As a fan of the Elder Scrolls series and as someone looking to practice his English this seems like a nice opportunity to do so.

This lets play (story) will be split out over various different characters I have played the games with. Meaning I will take some liberty with the timing, locations and names of various quests and characters for narrative purposes and work in a custom thread once in a while. With certainty I can say that the Dawnguard, Dragonborn and Civil War questline will be done each by a separate character. Anyway hope you enjoy the series and any criticism that doesn't suggest me castrating myself will be appreciated.
